Matthias

Matthias was chosen by the apostles to replace Judas Iscariot as the twelfth apostle after Jesus's ascension. His selection demonstrates the early church's commitment to maintaining apostolic leadership and seeking God's will through prayer and casting lots.

Overview

After Judas's betrayal and death, the eleven apostles gathered in Jerusalem to fill the vacant apostolic office. Peter led the process, emphasizing that the replacement had to be someone who had been with Jesus throughout His ministry and witnessed the resurrection. The disciples recognized this as fulfilling Old Testament prophecy regarding the apostolic office.
