Overview
Mattan served as a priest of Baal during the reign of Athaliah, the wicked queen of Judah who promoted idolatry throughout the kingdom. When the young King Joash was crowned and godly reforms were implemented under the guidance of the priest Jehoiada, Mattan and the false religious system he represented were removed from power. His execution symbolized the restoration of proper worship in Judah.
Key Scriptures
"And all the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars" (2 Kings 11:18, NIV).
"All the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars" (2 Chronicles 23:17, NIV).
Application
Believers should recognize that true spiritual leadership points people toward God's Word, and false teachers who lead others away from biblical truth ultimately face accountability before God.
