Overview
Matri was a member of the tribe of Benjamin whose family was specifically identified when Saul was chosen as Israel's first king. When Samuel gathered all Israel to present the newly selected king, the selection process proceeded by tribe, then by family, with Matri's family ultimately being chosen by lot. This genealogical detail emphasizes God's deliberate providence in establishing the monarchy.

Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the family of the Matrites was taken by lot; finally he brought the family of the Matrites near man by man, and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot.
