Overview
Makkedah served as the site of a decisive moment in Joshua's southern campaign. When five Amorite kings fled the battlefield after their defeat at Gibeon, they sought refuge in a cave near Makkedah. Joshua's forces sealed the cave and continued their pursuit of the enemy army, then returned to execute judgment on the captured kings.
Key Scriptures
"Then Joshua said, 'Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave'" (Joshua 10:22, ESV).
"So it was when they brought these kings out to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, 'Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings'" (Joshua 10:24, NASB).
"And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees" (Joshua 10:26, ESV).
Application
Makkedah reminds us that God's judgment is certain and that He empowers His people to accomplish His purposes through faith and obedience.
