Mahlah

Mahlah was one of five daughters of Zelophehad who boldly petitioned Moses for their father's inheritance when he died without sons, establishing an important biblical precedent for women's property rights in Israel.

Overview

Mahlah and her four sisters—Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah—approached Moses with a legal petition regarding their father Zelophehad's inheritance. Since their father had no sons and the law at that time typically passed inheritance through the male line, these courageous women asked for the right to inherit his land. Their request was granted, and Moses brought their case before the Lord, establishing a new statute for Israel.

Key Scriptures

"Then the daughters of Zelophehad came forward. Their father was Zelophehad... and he had no sons. And they said, 'Our father died in the wilderness... and he had no son. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father's brothers'" (Numbers 27:1-4, ESV).

"And Moses brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, 'The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers'" (Numbers 27:5-7, ESV).

Application

Mahlah's example demonstrates that advocating for justice according to God's law, even against cultural norms, honors Him and can prompt His guidance for His people.
