Overview
Levi, born to Jacob and Leah, represents one of the twelve patriarchs of Israel. His name means "attached" or "joined," reflecting Leah's hope that her husband would become attached to her through bearing sons. The tribe of Levi was uniquely consecrated by God to serve as priests and ministers, distinguishing them from the other tribes of Israel.
Key Scriptures
"Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords" (Genesis 49:5, ESV). "Let my soul not come into their council; let my glory not be joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen" (Genesis 49:6, ESV). "Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel" (Genesis 49:7, ESV).
Application
Reflect on how God redeems and transforms even those marked by sin—the Levites, though initially cursed for violence, became God's chosen priesthood, demonstrating His sovereign grace and redemptive purposes.
