Overview
Lamech was the son of Methusael and lived in the line of Cain. He was the first recorded polygamist in Scripture, taking two wives: Adah and Zillah. His descendants became known for significant human achievements, including music and metalworking, yet Lamech himself is remembered primarily for his arrogant boast about committing violence.
Key Scriptures
"Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah" (Genesis 4:19, NIV). "Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. His brother Jabal was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes" (Genesis 4:20-21, NIV). "Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me. If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times'" (Genesis 4:23-24, NIV).
Application
Lamech's life warns us that human achievement and innovation mean nothing without reverence for God, and that pride in our own strength leads to destruction.
