Kedesh

Kedesh was a city of refuge in northern Israel where the innocent could flee for protection from avengers of blood. It served as a place of sanctuary demonstrating God's provision for justice and mercy.

Overview

Kedesh was one of six cities of refuge appointed by God in Israel, located in the territory of Naphtali in Galilee. These cities provided asylum for those who committed unintentional manslaughter, protecting them from the kinsman-redeemer's vengeance until a fair trial could be held. The city represented God's balanced justice—protecting the innocent while maintaining accountability.

Key Scriptures

"Then the LORD said to Joshua, 'Designate the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the manslayer who kills any person without intent or unintentionally may flee there; and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood'" (Joshua 20:1-3, NASB).

"So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah" (Joshua 20:7, NASB).

Application

Reflect on how God's mercy protects the innocent while maintaining justice, and trust His systems of grace even when circumstances feel overwhelming.
