Jochebed

Jochebed was the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam who demonstrated extraordinary faith and courage by protecting her son during Egypt's genocide of Hebrew male infants. Her actions of obedience to God resulted in Moses becoming the deliverer of Israel.

Overview

Jochebed was a Levite woman living under Pharaoh's oppressive decree to kill all Hebrew male babies. When her son Moses was born, she hid him for three months, then placed him in a waterproof basket among the reeds of the Nile River. God's providence led Pharaoh's daughter to discover and adopt the child, while Jochebed herself became his nurse—a remarkable answer to prayer.

Key Scriptures

"Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months" (Exodus 2:1-2, NIV).

"When she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile" (Exodus 2:3, NIV).

Application
