Jobab

Jobab was an ancient king of Edom who ruled during the patriarchal period, mentioned briefly in genealogical records as a successor in the line of Edomite kings.

Overview

Jobab was a king of Edom whose reign is recorded in the genealogical lists of Genesis and 1 Chronicles. He succeeded Bela as ruler and was followed by Husham. Though little is known of his personal history or accomplishments, his inclusion in Scripture's historical records affirms God's sovereignty over all nations and peoples.

Key Scriptures

"Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place" (Genesis 36:33-34, ESV).

"When Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah from Bozrah reigned in his place. When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place" (1 Chronicles 1:44-45, ESV).

Application

Jobab's historical record reminds us that God's Word documents His providential care over all peoples and kingdoms throughout history, even those outside Israel.
