Joash

Joash was the son of Gideon (also called Jerubbaal) who became an important figure in Israel's history during the judges period. He is remembered for his role in preserving the worship of the true God and for fathering Gideon's successor.

Overview

Joash was Gideon's son and served as keeper of Gideon's household. After Gideon's death, Joash played a crucial role in Israel's spiritual leadership. He is particularly remembered for defending the worship of the Lord against those who would have destroyed Gideon's altar to Baal.

Key Scriptures

"Gideon had seventy sons who were his own offspring, for he had many wives. And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech" (Judges 8:30, ESV). "And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites" (Judges 8:32, ESV).

Application

Joash's example reminds us to stand firm in protecting God's truth and worship, even when facing opposition from those who would lead others away from the Lord.
