Jedaiah

Jedaiah refers to several individuals in biblical history, most notably a priestly family line that returned from Babylonian exile and served in the restored temple. The name means 'Yahweh knows' and appears prominently in post-exile records.

Overview

Jedaiah represents one of the priestly families that returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity (586-538 BC). Members of this family are listed among those who helped rebuild the temple and restore worship in Jerusalem under Zerubbabel and later under Nehemiah's leadership.

Key Scriptures

"The priests: the descendants of Jedaiah (through the line of Jeshua), 973" (Ezra 2:36, NIV).

"And Jedaiah, Jinnah, Shemaiah, Jehonathan, Adadiah, Tippuah, and Pethahiah—these were the heads of the priests and their associates in the days of Jeshua" (Nehemiah 11:10, NASB).

"And some of the descendants of the priests distributed the spiced ointments prepared by the apothecaries... And Jedaiah tended the house of the LORD" (1 Chronicles 9:30-31, ESV).

Application

Jedaiah's faithful return and service remind believers that God preserves a faithful remnant and restores His people through their obedient participation in His purposes.
