Jannes

Jannes was an Egyptian magician who opposed Moses during the plagues, representing spiritual resistance to God's truth that continues throughout history.

Overview

Jannes was one of the Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses and Aaron during the ten plagues (Exodus 7-9). Though not named in Exodus, Paul identifies him by name in 2 Timothy, using his opposition as a type of those who resist the gospel. His story illustrates how human wisdom and spiritual deception oppose God's truth.

Key Scriptures

"Now as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith" (2 Timothy 3:8, ESV).

"Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers. So the magicians of Egypt, they also did the same with their secret arts" (Exodus 7:11, NASB).

Application

When encountering opposition to biblical truth, remember that spiritual resistance is not new—believers should expect it and stand firm in God's Word rather than being swayed by worldly deception.
