Overview
Ittai was a native of Gath who became one of David's most trusted military commanders. When David fled Jerusalem during Absalom's coup, Ittai chose to remain loyal to the king despite having no ancestral claim to Israel or obligation to David's cause, making his allegiance particularly significant.
Key Scriptures
"Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, 'Why do you also go with us? Return and stay with the king, for you are a foreigner and also an exile from your own country'" (2 Samuel 15:19, ESV).
"Ittai answered the king and said, 'As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will your servant be'" (2 Samuel 15:21, NASB).
Application
Ittai's unwavering loyalty to David challenges believers to examine their own commitment to Christ, regardless of personal cost or social pressure.
