Israel

Israel is the name given to Jacob after he wrestled with God, signifying a transformed life marked by divine favor and persistence in faith. This foundational name became the identity of God's chosen people throughout Scripture.

Overview

Jacob's encounter with the divine being at Peniel transformed him spiritually and physically. After wrestling through the night, he was renamed Israel, meaning "he who strives with God" or "God prevails." This wrestling match represents the struggle of faith and the victory found in yielding to God's strength. The name Israel became the heritage of Jacob's descendants and God's covenant people.

Key Scriptures

"Then Jacob asked him, 'Please tell me your name.' But he said, 'Why is it that you ask my name?' And he blessed him there. So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, 'For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered'" (Genesis 32:29-30, ESV).

"He struggled with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor" (Hosea 12:4, ESV).

Application

Like Jacob, believers experience spiritual transformation through wrestling with God in prayer and faith, emerging renamed and renewed in their God-given purpose.
