Overview
God commanded Israel to destroy the idols and religious symbols of pagan nations as they entered the Promised Land. This practice, known as iconoclasm, was not arbitrary destruction but a necessary step to prevent the corruption of true worship and to demonstrate complete allegiance to God alone.
Key Scriptures
"You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire. You shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord your God" (Deuteronomy 7:25, ESV).
"Completely destroy all the places where the nations you are dispossessing have served their gods" (Deuteronomy 12:2, NIV).
"Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places" (Deuteronomy 12:3, NIV).
Application
Believers today should examine their lives and remove anything that competes with wholehearted devotion to God.
