Overview
Throughout Scripture, God demonstrates His concern for captives and those unjustly held. The Bible portrays God as a liberator who frees His people from physical and spiritual captivity, and calls believers to advocate for the oppressed and work toward justice and restoration.
Key Scriptures
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed" (Luke 4:18, ESV).
"Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?" (Isaiah 58:6, ESV).
"Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed" (Psalm 82:3, NIV).
Application
Believers should intercede in prayer for hostages' safe return and support efforts promoting justice while trusting God's sovereignty in all circumstances.
