Overview
Hosah was a Levite of the Merarite family who served as a gatekeeper in the tabernacle during King David's reign. He was appointed to his position of service when the ark of the covenant was brought to Jerusalem. His role exemplified the organized structure of worship and service that David established for Israel.
Key Scriptures
"The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. But Kish took a wife from the daughters of Judah, and he had sons: Jerahmeel. The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites by their fathers' houses" (1 Chronicles 23:23, ESV). "Hosah, one of the sons of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (for though he was not the firstborn, his father made him chief)" (1 Chronicles 26:10-11, ESV).
Application
Hosah's faithful service in a humble gatekeeper role reminds us that all positions in God's work, regardless of prominence, are essential to proper worship and community.
