Overview
Hobab was the son of Reuel (also called Jethro), Moses' father-in-law. After the exodus from Egypt, Moses urged Hobab to travel with the Israelites, promising him a share in God's promised blessings. Though Hobab initially declined, Moses persuaded him to join the community of faith as they journeyed toward Canaan.
Key Scriptures
"Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, 'We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, "I will give it to you." Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel'" (Numbers 10:29, ESV).
"But Hobab said to him, 'I will not go, but I will depart to my own land and to my relatives.' And Moses said, 'Please do not leave us'" (Numbers 10:30-31a, ESV).
Application
Believers should actively invite others to experience God's blessings and community, persistently encouraging them toward faith despite initial resistance.
