Hinnom

Hinnom (also called the Valley of the Son of Hinnom) was a valley southwest of Jerusalem that became a symbol of judgment and hell due to its association with idolatrous practices and divine judgment.

Overview

The Valley of Hinnom was located near Jerusalem and tragically became a place where unfaithful Israelites practiced child sacrifice to false gods. God pronounced severe judgment against this abomination, declaring the valley would become a place of desolation and death, ultimately making it a biblical symbol for hell itself (Gehenna).

Key Scriptures

"They have built the high places of Baal to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal—something I did not command or mention, nor did it enter my mind." (Jeremiah 7:31, NIV)

"So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room." (Jeremiah 7:32, NIV)

Application

Reflect on God's absolute hatred of idolatry and wickedness, recognizing that He judges sin seriously and calls us to wholehearted devotion to Him alone.
