Overview
Hilkiah served as high priest during the reign of King Josiah in Judah. While overseeing temple repairs and renovations, he made a significant discovery that would transform the nation's spiritual direction. His finding of the Book of the Law demonstrated God's providence in preserving His Word and initiated a powerful season of repentance and religious reformation throughout Judah.
Key Scriptures
"And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, 'I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.' And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan" (2 Chronicles 34:15, ESV).
"Then Shaphan brought the book to the king and reported to the king, saying, 'All that was committed to your servants they are doing. They have emptied out the money that was found in the house of the Lord and have given it to the overseers and the workers'" (2 Chronicles 34:14, ESV).
Application
Hilkiah's discovery reminds us that God's Word endures and often calls us back to biblical foundations when we stray from them.
