Overview
Hebrew was the ancient language of Israel and the primary language in which God gave His written revelation through the Old Testament prophets and scribes. The genealogy recorded in Genesis 11 traces the line from Shem through Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, Terah, and finally to Abram (Abraham), establishing the lineage through which God's covenant people would come. This genealogical record demonstrates God's sovereign plan unfolding through specific generations.
Key Scriptures
"Peleg lived thirty-four years and fathered Reu" (Genesis 11:18, ESV). "When Terah had lived seventy years, he fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran" (Genesis 11:26, ESV). "These are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot" (Genesis 11:27, ESV).
