Heathen

The term 'heathen' refers to those outside God's covenant people who lack knowledge of the true God and His Word. Scripture calls believers to recognize the spiritual darkness of heathen nations while maintaining separation from their ungodly practices.

Overview

In Scripture, 'heathen' describes pagan nations and peoples who do not know or worship the God of Israel. The heathen are characterized by idolatry, moral corruption, and spiritual blindness. However, God's redemptive plan extends even to heathen nations, and He calls His people to maintain holy separation from their sinful practices.

Key Scriptures

'Do not defile yourselves by any of these things, for by all these the nations which I am casting out before you have become defiled' (Leviticus 18:24, NASB). 'For the land has become defiled, therefore I have brought its punishment upon it' (Leviticus 18:25, NASB). 'He gave their land as a heritage, A heritage to Israel His people' (Psalms 136:21-22, NASB). 'Sing, O barren woman, who has not borne a child; Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud...For the children of the desolate one will be more numerous than the children of the married woman' (Isaiah 54:1-3, NASB).

Application

Believers should remain separate from ungodly practices while recognizing God's heart to extend salvation to all nations through the Gospel.
