Overview
In biblical usage, 'head' can denote the literal physical part of the body or serve as a metaphor for authority and leadership. The Leviticus passages address specific skin conditions on the scalp that required priestly examination for ceremonial purity under the Mosaic Law.
Key Scriptures
"If a man loses the hair of his head, he is bald; he is clean" (Leviticus 13:40, ESV). "And if there is a reddish-white sore on the bald head or the bald forehead, it is a leprous disease breaking out on his bald head or his bald forehead" (Leviticus 13:42, ESV). "He is an unclean man. The priest shall surely pronounce him unclean; his disease is on his head" (Leviticus 13:44, ESV).
Application
While these ceremonial laws no longer apply to Christians, they remind us of God's holiness and our need for spiritual cleansing through Christ, who is the head of the church and source of our purity.
