Hazael

Hazael was a Syrian king anointed by the prophet Elisha to become a tool of God's judgment against Israel. His reign was marked by military aggression against God's people, yet he remained under divine sovereignty.

Overview

Hazael rose to power in Syria during the reigns of Ahab's descendants in Israel. The prophet Elisha anointed him as king, prophesying that he would cause great suffering to Israel (2 Kings 8:8-15). Despite his brutal campaigns, Hazael's actions executed God's judgment on Israel's unfaithfulness, demonstrating that even pagan rulers serve God's purposes.

Key Scriptures

"So Elisha said to him, 'Go and say to him, "You shall surely recover." However, the LORD has shown me that he will surely die'" (2 Kings 8:10, NASB).

"Then he looked at him and stared at him until he was ashamed, and the man of God wept" (2 Kings 8:11, ESV).

"So Hazael departed from Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-hadad asked, 'What did Elisha say to you?' he answered, 'He told me that you would surely recover'" (2 Kings 8:14, NIV).

Application

Remember that God sovereignly orchestrates history to accomplish His purposes, sometimes using ungodly nations to refine and discipline His people.
