The return of Christ, also called the Second Coming or Parousia, is the future event when Jesus will return visibly and bodily to earth to judge all people and consummate His kingdom. This foundational Christian doctrine affirms Christ's promised return and the believer's hope for eternal life with Him.

Overview

Jesus promised His disciples that He would return to earth (John 14:3). This return will be visible and literal, occurring at an appointed time known only to the Father. At His return, Christ will judge the living and the dead, raise believers to eternal life, and establish His eternal kingdom.

Key Scriptures

"I am going away, and I will come back to you" (John 14:28, NIV). "After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air" (1 Thessalonians 4:17, NIV). "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats" (Matthew 25:31-32, NIV).

Application

Living in light of Christ's promised return should motivate believers toward holiness, evangelism, and faithful service, recognizing that all earthly pursuits are temporary compared to eternal glory.
