Gibea

Gibeah refers to several biblical locations, most notably the city in Benjamin where a Levite and his concubine experienced tragic violence, illustrating Israel's moral decline during the judges period.

Overview

Gibeah (meaning "hill") was a significant city in the tribe of Benjamin. The most notable biblical account involves the horrific events of Judges 19-20, where the inhabitants of Gibeah perpetrated sexual violence against a Levite's concubine, leading to civil war among the Israelite tribes and nearly resulting in Benjamin's complete destruction.

Key Scriptures

"But the men of Gibeah rose against me and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me, but instead they violated my concubine, and she died" (Judges 20:5, ESV).

"Now therefore hear the word of the Lord: You say, 'Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.' Therefore thus says the Lord: 'Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided up with a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land'" (Amos 7:16-17, ESV)—referencing Gibeah's judgment.

Application

This tragic account warns us that unchecked sin and the rejection of God's moral standards leads to community destruction and divine judgment.
