Vengeance

Vengeance belongs to God alone, not to human beings. Scripture calls believers to trust God's justice rather than taking revenge into their own hands.

Overview

The Bible consistently teaches that vengeance is God's prerogative and responsibility. While human anger at injustice is understandable, taking personal revenge violates God's design for justice and reflects a lack of faith in His sovereignty. Believers are called to leave room for God's wrath and to pursue reconciliation and forgiveness instead.

Key Scriptures

"O Lord, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth!" (Psalm 94:1, ESV). "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord'" (Romans 12:19, ESV). The account of Simeon and Levi's violent revenge on Shechem (Genesis 34:25-31) illustrates how personal vengeance displeases God and brings consequences on families and communities.

Application

When wronged, commit your cause to God's justice through prayer and proper authorities rather than pursuing personal revenge.
