Overview
The parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) illustrates the consequence of spiritual unpreparedness. Five virgins foolishly failed to bring extra oil for their lamps, assuming the bridegroom would arrive quickly. When the bridegroom's arrival was delayed, their lamps went out, leaving them unprepared for the crucial moment.
Key Scriptures
"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom" (Matthew 25:1, ESV). "Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them" (Matthew 25:2-3, ESV). "And at midnight there was a cry, 'Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps" (Matthew 25:6-7, ESV).
Application
Believers must actively cultivate spiritual readiness through prayer, Bible study, and obedience, rather than passively assuming they are prepared for Christ's return.
