Flax

Flax was a valuable crop in biblical times used for making linen cloth and oil, representing God's provision and the fruits of faithful labor.

Overview

Flax was an important agricultural product in ancient Israel and the Mediterranean world, cultivated for its fibers to produce linen cloth and for its seeds to produce oil. The plant appears throughout Scripture as a symbol of God's provision and the blessings that come from faithful stewardship of the land.

Key Scriptures

"She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands" (Proverbs 31:13, NIV). "The flax and the barley were ruined, since the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bloom" (Exodus 9:31, ESV). "Joshua sent two spies secretly from Shittim, saying, 'Go, view the land, especially Jericho.' And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there... she had hidden them with the stalks of flax that she had laid out on the roof" (Joshua 2:1-6, ESV).
