Sunstroke

Sunstroke, or heat stroke, is a serious physical ailment caused by excessive exposure to the sun's heat. The Bible acknowledges this danger and reminds us to steward our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit.

Overview

While sunstroke is not extensively discussed in Scripture, the Bible recognizes the physical dangers of extreme heat exposure. Ancient peoples understood the serious consequences of prolonged sun exposure, and biblical accounts reflect practical awareness of this threat to human health and survival.

Key Scriptures

"And it came to pass at noon, that Elisha said, 'Oh, that you were my brother, that you nursed at my mother's breast! When I found you in the field, I would have killed you. But now he said to his servant, 'Please bring him some food and water.' So a young man ran ahead of him and said, 'Behold, the boy is alive!' But when Elisha came to the house, behold, the boy was sitting on his bed, dead." (2 Kings 4:19, NASB). Additionally, Paul writes: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God?" (1 Corinthians 6:19, NIV).

Application

We honor God by caring for our physical health, including protecting ourselves from heat-related illness through proper hydration, rest, and caution during extreme temperatures.
