Extradition

Extradition involves the surrender of a person to another jurisdiction for trial or punishment. Biblical examples show how political authorities have sought to apprehend and deliver individuals across borders.

Overview

Extradition is the formal surrender of an accused or convicted person by one authority to another. While not explicitly addressed as a modern legal process, Scripture records instances where rulers sought to capture and deliver individuals to face judgment in another location.

Key Scriptures

"Then Jehoiakim the king sent men to Egypt... And they brought Urijah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, who struck him down with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people" (Jeremiah 26:22-23, ESV). "So Urijah fled and escaped to Egypt... King Jehoiakim sent to Egypt certain men" (Jeremiah 26:21-22, NASB).

Application

Believers should recognize that governmental authorities have legitimate power to pursue justice, while also praying for the protection of the innocent and righteous who may face unjust persecution.
