Envy

Envy is a destructive sin that arises from discontent with God's provision and comparison with others. Scripture warns that envy brings spiritual harm and separates us from God's peace.

Overview

Envy—desiring what belongs to another—is consistently portrayed in Scripture as a serious sin that damages both the envious person and relationships. Unlike healthy motivation, envy stems from discontent with God's sovereign provision and breeds further sin. The Bible reveals that envy leads to spiritual death and separation from God's presence.

Key Scriptures

"For wrath kills a foolish man, and anger slays one who is simple" (Job 5:2, NASB). "For to the man who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to hand it over to the one who pleases God" (Ecclesiastes 2:26, NIV). "Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God" (Galatians 5:19-21, NASB).

Application

Guard your heart against envy by regularly giving thanks for God's unique blessings in your life and remembering that comparison with others dishonors His sovereign plan for you.
