Entertainments

The Bible presents entertainments and celebrations as occasions for fellowship, joy, and community, yet calls believers to maintain holiness and wisdom in all recreational pursuits.

Overview

Scripture acknowledges that gatherings, feasts, and celebrations are a natural part of human life and can be occasions for building relationships and experiencing God's blessings. However, believers are consistently called to exercise discernment and ensure that entertainments do not lead to sin, excess, or compromise of spiritual values. The Christian approach to leisure should reflect gratitude to God and remain consistent with biblical standards of holiness.

Key Scriptures

"So David hid himself in the field. And when the new moon had come, the king sat down to eat food. The king sat on his seat, as at other times, on the seat by the wall. Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, but David's place was empty" (1 Samuel 20:24-25, ESV).

"Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places of the town" (Proverbs 9:1-3, ESV).

Application

Evaluate your entertainments by asking whether they draw you closer to Christ or create distance from Him, and choose activities that honor God and strengthen your community.
