Elishama

Elishama was a scribe in the court of King Jehoiakim who played a significant role in preserving Jeremiah's prophecies during a time of royal opposition to God's Word.

Overview

Elishama served as a royal scribe during the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah. When the king sought to suppress Jeremiah's message by destroying the scroll containing God's words, Elishama became an instrument of God's providence in preserving the prophet's testimony. His position and actions demonstrate how God works through individuals in positions of influence to accomplish His purposes.

Key Scriptures

"When Michaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the hearing of the people, then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, 'Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.' So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. And they said to him, 'Sit down and read it.' So Baruch read it to them. When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, 'We must report all these words to the king.'" (Jeremiah 36:13-16, ESV)

"Now when the king heard all these words, the officials were not afraid, nor did they tear their clothes" (Jeremiah 36:24, ESV)

Application

Believers today should recognize that God preserves His Word and truth through faithful witnesses, even when authorities oppose the Gospel message.
