Elasah

Elasah was one of the sons of Pashhur who returned from Babylonian exile and put away his foreign wife in obedience to God's law. His act of repentance exemplifies the spiritual restoration of God's people after captivity.

Overview

Elasah is mentioned in Ezra 10 as one of the priests who had taken foreign wives during the Babylonian exile. When Ezra confronted the people about their disobedience to God's law, Elasah joined others in repenting and separating from these marriages to restore the community's covenant faithfulness.

Key Scriptures

"And among the sons of the priests who had married foreign women were found: Of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah" (Ezra 10:18, ESV). "All these had married foreign women, and some of them had children by these wives" (Ezra 10:44, NIV). "Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, 'You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel's guilt'" (Ezra 10:10, NIV).

Application

Believers today should examine areas of spiritual compromise and respond with swift repentance when convicted by Scripture, just as Elasah chose obedience over comfort.
