Degrees as Steps of Spiritual Growth
Throughout Scripture, we encounter the concept of degrees as progressive steps in our spiritual journey. The psalmist beautifully describes this progression when he writes, "They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appears before God" (Psalm 84:7). This speaks to the reality that our faith develops gradually, moving from one level of maturity to another. Just as a child learns to walk before running, believers grow in their understanding of God's truth and their ability to serve Him more fully.
Paul addresses this progression when writing to the Corinthians about spiritual gifts and maturity. He reminds them that "when I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me" (1 Corinthians 13:11). This acknowledges that growth happens in degrees, that spiritual maturity is not instantaneous but develops over time through prayer, study of God's Word, and faithful obedience. The Holy Spirit works within us, sanctifying us progressively, as we surrender different areas of our lives to His lordship.
Degrees of Authority and Responsibility
The Bible also uses the language of degrees when discussing levels of authority and responsibility within God's kingdom. Jesus taught His disciples about different capacities for service, saying, "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things'" (Matthew 25:21). This parable illustrates that God entrusts us with responsibilities in degrees, testing our faithfulness at one level before promoting us to greater kingdom work.
Similarly, Paul discusses the varied roles within the church body: "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7). Different believers receive different spiritual gifts and callings in varying measures. This diversity in degrees of giftedness and responsibility reflects God's sovereign design for His church, where each member contributes according to what the Holy Spirit has apportioned to them.
Living Faithfully at Every Degree
As followers of Christ, understanding the concept of degrees helps us maintain a healthy perspective on our spiritual journey. We should neither become discouraged by comparing our current spiritual position with others who appear further along, nor become complacent, thinking we have "arrived" at our destination. God calls us to faithfulness at our present degree, knowing that genuine growth is measured not by outward comparison but by our increasing conformity to Christ and obedience to His Word.
Whether you're a new believer taking first steps in faith or a mature Christian serving in leadership, remember that God values your faithfulness where you are. By embracing the reality that spiritual growth happens in degrees, we free ourselves from the burden of perfectionism and open ourselves to the patient, transformative work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen." — 2 Peter 3:18
