Conspiracies in Scripture
The Bible is remarkably honest about human wickedness and the reality of conspiracies. Throughout Scripture, we see examples of people plotting together against God's purposes and His people. In Matthew 26:3-4, the chief priests and elders of the people gathered together in the palace of the high priest Caiaphas and plotted how they might arrest Jesus and kill Him. This conspiracy against Jesus represents the ultimate example of human rebellion against God's plan.
The Psalms frequently describe the conspiracies of the wicked. In Psalm 31:13, David laments, "For I hear many whispering—terror on every side—as they conspire against me and plot to take my life." Similarly, the book of Acts reveals repeated conspiracies against the early church and the apostles (Acts 23:12-13). These passages show that conspiracy is a genuine human problem rooted in sinful hearts, not merely a modern phenomenon or unfounded fear.
However, Scripture never portrays conspiracies as ultimately successful against God's will. Even when wicked people scheme and plot, God remains sovereign. Proverbs 19:21 reminds us, "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."
God's Sovereignty Over All Schemes
The foundational biblical response to conspiracy is remembering God's complete sovereignty. Nothing happens outside His knowledge or control. In Isaiah 8:9-10, the prophet encourages God's people: "Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered! Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle, and be shattered! Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us."
Jesus Himself taught His disciples not to fear those who scheme against them. In Matthew 10:26-28, He said, "So do not be afraid of them... fear only God." This teaching doesn't deny that conspiracies exist; rather, it redirects our focus from fear of human schemes to reverence for God's ultimate authority. Jesus' own resurrection proves that even the most carefully laid human conspiracy—the plot to eliminate Him—served God's redemptive purposes.
Wisdom and Discernment
While trusting God's sovereignty, believers are also called to practical wisdom. Proverbs consistently encourages discernment and awareness of evil schemes (Proverbs 12:16, 14:8). Jesus Himself told His disciples in Matthew 10:16, "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." This balance—combining awareness with innocence—protects us from both naïveté and paranoia.
As Canadian believers, we can face uncertain times and troubling news with calm confidence. Rather than becoming consumed by theories about hidden schemes, we're called to "be anxious for nothing, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). This peace is available to all who trust in God's faithful care.
