Cononiah

Cononiah was a faithful Levite who served as an overseer of voluntary offerings during King Hezekiah's spiritual reforms in Judah.

Who Was Cononiah?

Cononiah appears in the biblical account during one of Judah's most significant spiritual awakenings. In 2 Chronicles 31:12-13, we meet him as a chief officer who worked alongside the High Priest Azariah. During King Hezekiah's reforms—a remarkable season when the temple was cleansed and worship was restored to the Lord—Cononiah was entrusted with a crucial responsibility. He was appointed to oversee the collection and distribution of the voluntary offerings that God's people brought to the temple.

The context of Cononiah's service is deeply encouraging. Hezekiah had called the nation back to covenant faithfulness after a period of spiritual decline under his father, King Ahaz. The people responded with genuine enthusiasm, bringing freewill offerings of cattle, sheep, and tithes to support the temple ministry and the Levites who served there. This wasn't a task forced upon the people—it was a joyful expression of their renewed devotion to the Lord.

A Model of Faithful Administration

What makes Cononiah's account particularly valuable is what it reveals about faithful stewardship in God's kingdom. He didn't serve in a high-profile position like a priest or king, yet his work was essential. Managing the voluntary offerings required integrity, organization, and a genuine heart for God's house. Cononiah had to account for what came in and ensure it was properly distributed to support the Levites and the temple work.

The fact that Scripture names him and records his service reminds us that the Lord notices faithful work done in humility. Cononiah wasn't seeking personal glory—he was serving God's people and God's house. His example demonstrates that every role in God's kingdom matters, whether it's highly visible or quietly faithful behind the scenes. In 2 Chronicles 31:14, we see that he even had subordinates helping him, suggesting he was trustworthy enough to delegate and oversee others.

A Challenge for Today's Believers

As Canadian Christians, we can learn much from Cononiah's example. In our churches and Christian organizations, we need people of integrity who will faithfully manage the resources God's people entrust to them. Whether you're a treasurer, volunteer coordinator, or simply someone who helps ensure God's work is done well, your service matters. Cononiah reminds us that serving in administrative or support roles is just as much a calling as any other ministry gift.

Consider where God might be calling you to faithful stewardship—in your church's finances, in organizing volunteer efforts, or in managing resources for ministry. Like Cononiah, approach this work with a heart devoted to the Lord and a commitment to honor those who give their tithes and offerings. When the whole body of Christ—from the most visible leaders to the faithful administrators—works together in integrity, God's kingdom advances powerfully.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." — Colossians 3:23-24
