The Foundation of Christian Character
Character in Scripture refers to the inner qualities and moral fiber that define who we truly are when no one is watching. The apostle Paul reminds us that character is built through a process of spiritual development. In Romans 5:3-4, Paul writes, "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." This passage reveals that trials and difficulties are not obstacles to character—they are the very means by which God shapes and refines us.
Jesus taught His disciples that character flows from within. In Matthew 12:34-35, He declared, "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things; and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things." Our words and actions reveal the true condition of our hearts. This is why Proverbs 4:23 exhorts us: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." We must be vigilant about cultivating godly character from the inside out.
The Content of Christian Character
The Bible describes character through the fruit of the Spirit and various virtues that should adorn every believer. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit: "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." These qualities work together to form a mature, Christ-like character. When we allow the Holy Spirit to produce these fruits in our lives, we become living testimonies to the transforming power of the Gospel.
Second Peter 1:5-7 provides another comprehensive list: "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love." Peter emphasizes that character development is a deliberate, ongoing process requiring our cooperation with God's grace. We are not passive recipients; we are called to actively pursue these virtues through discipline and intentional obedience.
Developing and Demonstrating Character
As followers of Christ living in Canada and beyond, we are called to demonstrate character that points others toward Jesus. First Timothy 4:12 encourages young believers: "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in all you do, in your speech, your life, your love, your faith and your purity." Our consistent, faithful living becomes a silent sermon that speaks louder than words.
The development of character requires daily surrender to God and commitment to His Word. We cultivate character through Bible study, prayer, honest relationships, and faithful obedience in small things. When we integrate God's truth into our daily decisions—in our workplaces, families, and communities—we gradually become the people God intends us to be. This is the beauty of the Gospel: God doesn't just forgive our sins; He transforms our very nature, conforming us to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29).
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Colossians 3:12).
