What Is the Chamois?
The chamois is a small, agile antelope native to the rocky mountain regions of the Middle East and Mediterranean lands. In biblical times, these creatures inhabited the steep, craggy terrain of territories familiar to the Israelites. Unlike the larger deer and gazelle, the chamois was smaller and remarkably nimble, capable of navigating treacherous mountain passages with extraordinary balance and confidence. The chamois appears by name in only one passage of Scripture, yet this mention is significant. In 1 Kings 4:23, we learn that King Solomon's provisions included chamois among the animals used to supply his royal table. The verse reads: "And Solomon's provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal, ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and an hundred sheep, beside harts, and roebucks, and fallows deer, and fatted fowl" (KJV). Some translations include the chamois among these delicacies, indicating that this mountain animal was considered worthy of a king's table, suggesting both its desirability and relative rarity.

In Isaiah 35:6, we find another reference to this sureness of foot: "Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert" (KJV).
