Carnal Mindedness

Carnal mindedness is the orientation of our thoughts toward worldly desires rather than God's Spirit, hindering spiritual growth and obedience to Christ.

Understanding Carnal Mindedness

Carnal mindedness refers to a mental and spiritual condition where our thoughts, desires, and priorities are dominated by fleshly or worldly concerns rather than by the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul addresses this directly in Romans 8:6, where he writes, "For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." The Greek word for "carnal" (sarx) literally means "flesh," and Paul uses it throughout his epistles to describe the old sinful nature that wars against our spiritual nature.

This condition isn't merely about occasional sinful thoughts—it describes a settled orientation of the mind and heart. In Colossians 3:2, Paul instructs believers: "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." When we are carnally minded, we set our affections on temporary, earthly pursuits: wealth, status, physical gratification, and worldly recognition. These become our primary focus rather than God's kingdom and righteousness.

It's important to recognize that carnal mindedness can afflict believers, not just unbelievers. Paul addresses this problem in the church at Corinth, saying in 1 Corinthians 3:1-3, "And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ... For ye are yet carnal." These were Christians, yet their minds and hearts remained fixed on earthly matters, rivalries, and divisions rather than on Christ.

The Consequences and Spiritual Warfare

Carnal mindedness creates a barrier between us and God's best for our lives. Romans 8:7 explains the gravity of this condition: "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." When we allow our minds to be dominated by fleshly desires, we position ourselves in opposition to God's purposes, even unconsciously.

Paul describes this inner struggle vividly in Romans 7:23, acknowledging the warfare between our flesh and our spirit: "But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin." This is the reality many believers face—a constant tension between what our fallen nature desires and what God desires for us. Yet Paul also proclaims the victory available through Christ in Romans 8:1: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus."

Overcoming Carnal Mindedness

The remedy for carnal mindedness is deliberate, sustained renewal of our minds through Scripture and prayer. Romans 12:2 provides our marching orders: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." This transformation requires intentional choices: replacing worldly media with God's Word, redirecting our ambitions toward spiritual maturity, and cultivating genuine prayer life.

As believers in Canada, we live in a culture that constantly pulls our attention toward material success, entertainment, and self-advancement. Our calling is to resist these currents through the power of the Holy Spirit. When you find your mind drifting toward carnal concerns, pause and ask yourself: Does this align with God's kingdom? Will this matter for eternity? By regularly asking such questions and filling your mind with Scripture, worship, and prayer, you'll find yourself gradually transformed into spiritual-mindedness that yields genuine peace and purpose.
