Bela

Bela was an early Edomite king and also a son of Benjamin, representing God's providence in establishing nations and families within His sovereign plan.

Bela in Edomite History

The name Bela appears prominently in the genealogies of Edom, one of Israel's neighboring nations. In Genesis 36:32-33, we read that "Bela son of Beor became king of Edom. His city was named Dinhabah." This Bela was the first king mentioned in Edom's succession of rulers, reigning before the time when Israel had kings of her own. The fact that Edom had established kingship before Israel reveals an important truth: God's providential hand extends beyond His covenant people to order the affairs of surrounding nations according to His purposes.

Edom, descended from Esau (Genesis 36:1), occupied the mountainous regions southeast of the Dead Sea. Though Edom and Israel were closely related through their common ancestor Isaac, they often stood in tension with one another. Yet even in this rivalry, we see God's sovereignty at work. The presence of early kings like Bela demonstrates that God was establishing the political structures of neighboring peoples, all within His overarching plan of redemptive history. As Romans 13:1 reminds us, "The authorities that exist have been established by God."

Bela, Son of Benjamin

A second figure named Bela appears in the tribal genealogy of Benjamin. In 1 Chronicles 7:6-7, Bela is listed as one of the sons of Benjamin: "Benjamin was the father of Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second son, Aharah the third, Nohah the fourth and Rapha the fifth." This Bela represents the continuation of Benjamin's line and the preservation of tribal identity within Israel. The careful recording of these genealogies in Chronicles underscores the importance God places on covenant faithfulness and the continuation of His people through successive generations.

Additionally, in Numbers 26:38-40, Bela appears again in the census records, with his descendants listed as the Belaites. These genealogical records, while sometimes overlooked in casual Bible reading, reveal something profound: God cares deeply about individuals and families. He knows us by name and remembers our lineage. Each person in these lists represents a life lived before God, and each generation carried forward the covenant promise given to Abraham.

Practical Application for Our Lives

What can we learn from the figures named Bela? First, we see that God's sovereignty extends over all nations and peoples, not just the redeemed. Whether through an Edomite king or a Benjamite heir, God orders history according to His purposes. This should encourage us that nothing in our world escapes His attention or control, even when circumstances seem chaotic or uncertain.

Second, these genealogies remind us that God values continuity and faithfulness across generations. We are called to live with the awareness that our choices ripple through time, affecting our families and communities for generations to come. As you navigate your own season of life, remember that you are part of God's grand narrative. He knows you by name, values your lineage, and has a purpose for your life within His redemptive plan. Live with the confidence that comes from being part of God's eternal family.
