Study Notes — Luke 18
6 sectionsLuke chapter 18 presents a masterclass in kingdom values through four connected passages. Jesus teaches about persistent prayer, true righteousness, childlike faith, and the danger of earthly wealth. Throughout these scenes, He contrasts the kingdom of God with the values of the world: a widow's persistent faith against a godless judge, a tax collector's humility against a Pharisee's pride, a child's simple trust against adult self-sufficiency, and spiritual treasure against material possessions. The chapter culminates in Jesus's prediction of His passion and a blind beggar's restoration of sight—a fitting image of spiritual blindness healed by faith.
Jesus introduces this parable with a clear purpose: men ought always to pray, and not to faint (v. 1). The unjust judge—a man who fears neither God nor man—represents the antithesis of the righteous judge. Yet even this corrupt official will grant justice to the widow simply because she wears him down with her persistence. The thrust is striking: if an unjust judge yields to relentless petition, how much more will a righteous and loving God respond to His chosen ones (v. 7)? The word elect refers to God's people, chosen and precious to Him. Yet verse 8 contains a sobering note: Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? True prayer flows from faith, not mere mechanical repetition. Jesus warns that when He returns, faith itself—confident trust in God—may be rare.
Application: Believers are called to pray persistently without losing heart, trusting that God's character is infinitely superior to an unjust judge. Our prayers are not wearying to Him but precious.
This parable targets certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others (v. 9). The Pharisee's prayer (vv. 11–12) is a catalog of self-congratulation: he is not like other sinners, he fasts regularly, he tithes meticulously. His prayer thanks God but truly praises himself. By contrast, the tax collector (publican) stands afar off—expressing shame and distance—and cries out, God be merciful to me a sinner (v. 13). His posture, refusal to lift his eyes, and beating of his breast all signal genuine contrition. The verdict is startling: this man went down to his house justified rather than the other (v. 14). Justification comes not through works or comparison with others, but through humble acknowledgment of sin and dependence on God's mercy. Verse 14 concludes with a principle that reverberates throughout Scripture: every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Application: Authentic prayer requires honest self-assessment and dependence on divine mercy, not moral achievement or comparison with others.
When disciples rebuke those bringing infants to Jesus, He welcomes them and teaches a profound truth: of such is the kingdom of God (v. 16). Children possess what adults often lack—trust without skepticism, receptivity without resistance. Jesus does not romanticize childishness but highlights the childlike posture of faith: simple trust, absence of self-sufficiency, and openness to receive.
Application: Entry into God's kingdom requires abandoning pretense and self-reliance, embracing instead the trusting dependence of a child.
A ruler asks the fundamental question: what shall I do to inherit eternal life? (v. 18). Jesus redirects him to the commandments, which the man claims to have kept. Yet Jesus identifies one lack: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven (v. 22). Wealth had become this man's functional god. His sorrow (v. 23) reveals his true allegiance. Jesus teaches that riches create hardship for entering the kingdom (v. 24), using the vivid image of a camel through a needle's eye (v. 25). When disciples ask Who then can be saved? (v. 26), Jesus replies, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God (v. 27). Salvation is God's work, not human achievement.
Application: Nothing must compete with allegiance to Christ; material security cannot substitute for spiritual trust in God.
Jesus foretells His death and resurrection (vv. 31–33), though the disciples understand nothing (v. 34). Near Jericho, a blind beggar persistently cries out to Jesus, undeterred by rebuke (vv. 35–39). His faith—crying to the "Son of David"
