Study Notes — John 20
7 sectionsJohn chapter 20 stands at the absolute heart of the Gospel narrative and Christian theology. It recounts the events of the first Easter morning—Christ's bodily resurrection from the dead and His appearances to His disciples. Through the eyewitness accounts of Mary Magdalene, Peter, John, and Thomas, this chapter establishes that Jesus did not remain dead but rose victoriously, fulfilling Scripture and validating His claim to be God's Son. The chapter culminates with a clear statement of purpose: these accounts are written so that we might believe in Jesus as the Christ and find eternal life through His name.
Mary Magdalene arrives at the sepulchre in the darkness of early morning and finds the stone rolled away. Her immediate conclusion—that someone has stolen the body—reflects the disciples' unpreparedness for the resurrection. She runs to tell Peter and John (the "other disciple, whom Jesus loved"). The two disciples race to the tomb; John arrives first but hesitates at the entrance, while Peter boldly enters and observes the grave clothes lying undisturbed. The detail that the linen clothes remain wrapped (verses 6–7) is significant: this is not a grave robbing, which would have involved unwrapping the body. Rather, it suggests something miraculous—the risen body passing through the grave clothes as easily as light passes through a window.
When John enters the tomb and sees the condition of the grave clothes, he believes—though he and the other disciples do not yet understand Scripture's teaching on resurrection (verse 9). This is genuine faith arising from evidence, yet incomplete without the full revelation. The disciples then depart, having witnessed enough to stir faith but still clouded by confusion and fear.
Mary remains at the sepulchre weeping. She sees two angels but, absorbed in grief, hardly registers them. When Jesus Himself appears, she mistakes Him for a gardener—a poignant reminder that the resurrection body, while real and physical, is transformed and not immediately recognizable (verse 14). Yet one word changes everything: Jesus speaks her name, "Mary," and she immediately recognizes Him and worships Him as "Rabboni" (Master). Jesus instructs her not to touch Him, explaining that He has not yet ascended to the Father. Instead, He commissions her as His messenger to the disciples, emphasizing the family relationship now established: "my Father, and your Father; my God, and your God" (verse 17). This is profoundly tender—through the resurrection, believers are brought into the same filial relationship with God that Christ enjoys.
On the evening of that same day, Jesus appears to the gathered disciples behind locked doors. His greeting—"Peace be unto you"—becomes His repeated word of comfort (verses 19, 21). He shows them His pierced hands and side, proving the continuity between the crucified and risen Jesus. He then breathes upon them, saying "Receive ye the Holy Ghost" (verse 22). This dramatic gesture recalls God's breath in Genesis 2:7 and previews Pentecost. The authority to remit or retain sins (verse 23) refers not to sacramental power but to the disciples' calling to proclaim the Gospel truthfully—those who believe are forgiven; those who reject Christ remain in their sins.
Thomas's absence and subsequent doubt (verses 24–25) is not condemnable unbelief but understandable human caution. Yet his demand for physical proof gives way to the highest confession: "My LORD and my God" (verse 28). Jesus's response is a beatitude: "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed" (verse 29). This pronounces a special blessing on all future generations of believers who will trust without the privilege of physical encounter.
John concludes by stating that many other miraculous signs are unrecorded, but what is written achieves its aim: that readers "might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name." This is the Gospel's explicit purpose—not historical exhaustiveness but salvific faith.
The resurrection is not merely a historical claim but the foundation of our hope and transformation. Like Thomas, we are invited to believe without seeing—and to experience the blessing Jesus pronounced. The risen Christ offers us not just forgiveness but reconciliation with God as His brothers and sisters. We are commissioned, as Mary was, to proclaim this good news. When doubt or discouragement cloud our faith, we can remember that Jesus knows our names and bids us peace.
