Study Notes — 1 Corinthians 7
6 sections1 Corinthians 7 addresses one of the most significant and personal areas of Christian life: marriage, singleness, and sexual relationships. Paul responds to questions the Corinthian church had written to him about, providing biblical wisdom that honors both the gift of marriage and the calling of singleness. Throughout this chapter, Paul's central concern is helping believers live in a way that serves the Lord faithfully, whether married or unmarried, while recognizing that God distributes different gifts to different people.
Paul begins by affirming that celibacy is good, but immediately clarifies that marriage is the proper response for those who cannot remain single without temptation (v. 2). He then establishes a profound biblical principle: marriage involves mutual authority and responsibility. The husband and wife belong to one another (vv. 3–4), and both must fulfill their sexual duties to avoid tempting each other toward sin. Verse 5 permits temporary abstinence only by mutual agreement for prayer and fasting, followed by a return to normal relations. This passage elevates marriage as a divinely ordained relationship where neither spouse owns their own body—a countercultural statement in Paul's day and ours.
Application: Married believers should view sexual intimacy as a sacred responsibility, not merely a privilege. Neglecting one's spouse's needs opens the door to temptation and dishonors the covenant.
Paul clarifies that his preference for celibacy (v. 7) is personal, not a command for all. He acknowledges that God distributes gifts differently—some are called to singleness, others to marriage. For the unmarried and widows, remaining single is honorable if they possess the gift of continence (self-control). However, Paul is refreshingly honest: if someone cannot control sexual desire, it is better to marry than to "burn" with lust (v. 9). Here Paul refuses to impose an impossible standard; he meets people where they are with practical, compassionate wisdom.
Application: The church should honor both married and single believers. Singleness is not a lesser calling, but neither should we shame those who marry. Each person must honestly assess their own capacity and gifts.
Paul now addresses divorce (vv. 10–11), citing the Lord's direct command that wives should not separate from husbands, and husbands should not divorce wives. If separation occurs, reconciliation is the goal, or remaining unmarried. He then turns to the sensitive issue of "unequal yoking"—believing married to unbelieving (vv. 12–16). Unlike divorce, Paul offers no command from the Lord here, but his own judgment: if an unbelieving spouse is willing to remain, the believer should not initiate separation. The unbeliever is "sanctified" not by conversion, but by association with the believing spouse and the holiness of their home, which extends to the children (v. 14). Yet if the unbeliever departs, the believer is not bound (v. 15). Verse 16 offers hope: you never know if your faithful witness might lead to your spouse's salvation.
Application: Christians in mixed-faith marriages should not despair; faithful love and witness matter. However, believers must not enter marriage with an unbeliever, as this sets the stage for such difficulty.
Paul shifts to a broader principle (v. 17): remain in the calling wherein God has placed you. His examples—circumcision and slavery (vv. 18–22)—show that external circumstances matter less than inner freedom in Christ. A Christian slave is truly the Lord's freedman; a free Christian is Christ's servant (v. 22). The point: your station in life does not define your worth or your walk with God.
Paul offers his judgment on virgins (v. 25), emphasizing that singleness is good in light of present distress and the shortness of time (vv. 26–29). The unmarried are free to focus wholly on pleasing the Lord without worldly distractions (vv. 32–35). Yet marriage is not sin; it is simply attended by earthly cares. Paul closes by affirming that remarriage after a husband's death is permitted "only in the Lord"—meaning a believing spouse (v. 39)—but suggests contentment in remaining single is fuller joy (v. 40).
Whether married, single, or widowed, believers are called to honor God in their state and to recognize that He has equipped us differently. Marriage is a covenant to be cherished and protected; singleness is a gift to be stewarded. In both states, our supreme aim must be pleasing the Lord and living with undivided hearts toward Him. The world pressures us to find identity and fulfillment in relationships; Scripture teaches us to find our identity in Christ alone.
