Wafer

2 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Wafers were unleavened cakes made without yeast, used primarily in the grain offerings and consecration ceremonies of ancient Israel. These thin breads symbolized purity and were offered alongside other sacrificial elements as part of the worship system God established through Moses. The wafer represented the people's dedication and the bread of their labor offered to God.

Key Scriptures

"And from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord he took one unleavened cake and one cake of bread with oil and one wafer, and put them on the fat pieces and on the right thigh" (Leviticus 8:26, ESV).

"And from the basket of unleavened bread that is before the Lord he shall take one unleavened cake and one cake of bread with oil and one wafer, and put them on the palms of the Nazirite, after he has shaved the head of his consecration" (Numbers 6:19, ESV).

Application

Consider how the wafer's simplicity and purity remind us that true worship requires a sincere, undivided heart dedicated wholly to God.
