Overview
Upharsin (also rendered "Peres") was part of the supernatural inscription "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" that appeared on the palace wall during King Belshazzar's blasphemous feast. This word specifically meant "divided" and declared that God would divide Belshazzar's kingdom and give it to the Medes and Persians. The writing revealed God's sovereignty over earthly rulers and kingdoms.
Key Scriptures
"And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN." (Daniel 5:25, NASB)
"PERES; your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and Persians." (Daniel 5:28, NASB)
Application
Believers should recognize that God judges pride and irreverence, holds all earthly powers accountable, and can swiftly remove authority from those who reject Him.
