Sabbath Day's Journey

1 scripture reference — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

The Sabbath day's journey was a rabbinical restriction limiting travel to roughly 2,000 cubits (about half a mile) on the Sabbath. Jewish leaders developed this rule to prevent violation of the Sabbath rest commandment, though the distance itself appears nowhere in Scripture. It represents human tradition added to God's law.

Key Scriptures

"Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away" (Acts 1:12, NASB). This reference shows the early believers' familiarity with this traditional measurement when describing the distance from where Jesus ascended to the city.

Application

Consider how legalistic restrictions, while sometimes well-intentioned, can obscure God's actual commands—Jesus frequently challenged such traditions, reminding us that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath (Mark 2:27).
