Overview
In Matthew 5:22, Jesus elevates the command against murder to address the heart condition behind it. He teaches that calling someone "raca" (an Aramaic term of contempt meaning empty-headed or worthless) places a person in danger of judgment. This shows that God's law extends beyond external actions to our internal attitudes and the words we speak in anger.
Key Scriptures
"But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, 'Raca,' is answerable to the court" (Matthew 5:22, NIV).
"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34, ESV). Jesus emphasized that harsh words reveal the condition of our hearts.
Application
Examine your speech toward others—especially in moments of frustration—and ask the Holy Spirit to guard your heart against contempt, replacing it with love and respect for those made in God's image.
